Marissa Mayer has taken the helm at Yahoo.  Coming recently from Google where she had been one of its first employees, she brings excellent experience, skills, and Internet business acumen to Yahoo.  And she will need it.

Yahoo seems to be going through a bit of an identity crisis.  Mayer will be the seventh CEO in five years.  Research firm, EMarketer, affirms Yahoo’s share of US online ad revenue has dropped from 15.7% in 2009 to 9.5% in 2011.  That is a significant bump in the wrong direction over two years.

What’s in Yahoo’s future is anybody’s guess.  Back in the day, Yahoo seemed to be a sure thing in the tech world.  I’m not so sure anymore.

I think it will depend on how well Mayer can refocus the organization.  Certainly, she will need to come up with a strategic plan to compete more effectively in the Internet marketplace.  Let’s face it, many daunting players exist.  Regardless, the results will be interesting to analyze.

Yahoo or boohoo?  We’ll have to wait and see.
